Disability Survey -

ARI does carry out assessment studies. In 2004 a major survey on disability was carried out in four Southern Africa Regional countries; Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Regional Disability Survey was completed in April, 2006. Details are found elsewhere on the Website or from ARI on request.




World Disability Day -

ARI will lead in line with the Institute’s Mandate in carrying out commemorations of this important day World Disability Day, every 3rd December, of each year.

Part of the mandate of ARI is to do research in the field of rehabilitation and disability prevention. In the earlier days of ARI a research was carried out in the Mberengwa area of Zimbabwe. The research was on needs of the person with disabilities and their families in the rural areas. Results from the Research were published.

With co-financing from the African Development Bank (ADB) a study dubbed Survey on the Assessment of Former Trainees from Vocational Training Centres was developed for Malawi. This was carried out from August, 2002 to 2 May, 2003.

A much bigger research study was carried out from November, 2004 to May 2006. This study called the Regional Disability Survey covered four countries Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Objectives of the Regional Disability Survey

The study was carried at obtaining accurate information on the incidence and type of disability, the conditions of persons with disability, marriage and social practices, gender issues, cultural and other factors other aims of the study were:

  • Increase knowledge about the types of disability
  • Gather information on the incidence, prevalence and related aspects of disability in the four countries
  • Assess issues pertaining to human rights including employment, social/cultural inclusion, education, and incidence of discrimination.
  • Accessibility to facilities and places such as public transport, public and private buildings banks, schools, hospital e.t.c
  • Determine prevalence and extent of disability and availability of support services.
  • Determine accessibility of important health information such as AIDS/HIV awareness, diseases and prevention.
  • Try and determine cultural and social practices over disability and towards PWDs.

FUTURE PLANS ON STUDY


ARI intends to secure partners, to carry out important programmes to address some of the problems identified in the study such as cultural issues concerning disability including marriage practices, dissemination of information on AIDS and HIV including diseases prevention methods (very little has been done in this area for PWDs) and promotion of Inclusion Policies with Governments particularly in education, employment and social activities.
