Message from the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Development of the Republic of Kenya

On Thursday 18th February 2010 was inaugurated the African Rehabilitation Institute, Eastern African Regional Office. This ceremony is significant not only for the Government and people of Kenya but for the region. The regional office will cover twelve (12) countries in the Eastern African region, namely Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Comoros, Somalia and Seychelles.

1.The City of Harare is the seat of the African Rehabilitation Institute (ARI) Headquarters and the Southern Regional Office (SRO). The premises allocated by the Government of Zimbabwe for the Headquarters and the Southern Regional Offices’s operations are located in the City Centre at Batanai Gardens at the corner of Jason Moyo Avenue and First Street. The ARI Headquarters was inaugurated on 11 May 1988 when the Offices were officially handed over to the Chairman of the ARI Governing Board (OAU) and the host Agreement was also signed. 2.Brazzavile, Congo is the focal point for ARI activities involving Central African countries. The Host Country Agreement was signed on the 18th September 1986, and the Inauguration of the ARI Branch Office for Central Africa took place on 13 December, 1986. 3.The City of Dakar Senegal is hosting the ARI Regional Office for West Africa which provides and co-ordinates all rehabilitation activities of the ARI Member States in that Region. On 13 December 1990 the inauguration of this office was realized and got the blessing of the OAU Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Salim Ahmed Salim who officiated at the occasion. 4.Negotiations are at a very advanced stage with Governments in East Africa for the Establishment of the ARI Regional Office for East Africa. Countries that have been contacted so far are Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Rwanda is now in the process of becoming an ARI Member State.
