Inauguration of the ARI East Africa Region -

Message from the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Development of the Republic of Kenya

On Thursday 18th February 2010 was inaugurated the African Rehabilitation Institute, Eastern African Regional Office. This ceremony is significant not only for the Government and people of Kenya but for the region. The regional office will cover twelve (12) countries in the Eastern African region, namely Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Comoros, Somalia and Seychelles.

Disability Survey -

ARI does carry out assessment studies. In 2004 a major survey on disability was carried out in four Southern Africa Regional countries; Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Regional Disability Survey was completed in April, 2006. Details are found elsewhere on the Website or from ARI on request.

Disability Challenge For ARI

The Disability problem is aggravated by people’s perception of disability, attitudes of communities and societies and the individual PWD’S own perception of himself or herself and his or her disability vis a vis his or her family, his or her disability; his or her family; his or her community and society.

Provisions within the legal system of each country can have a negative or positive impact to this problem.
ARI’s role is to uplift the well being of PWDs through information campaigns (knowledge is power); training PWDs to manage their own affairs as independently as possible or with little assistance from other persons; training to make oneself less dependant on others for mobility or carrying out everyday activities and chores; training to make oneself aware of one’s rights and priviledges within the family set up and within the community and the country; advocacy to promote acceptance and recognition of PWDs and to get them accepted in formal schools, formal employment and to participate in economic activities by promoting the concepts of CBR and inclusion
